Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Mainstreaming, Analysis & Planning Gender in Humanitarian Action

Introduction

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is a pervasive and alarming issue that affects individuals worldwide, cutting across cultures, societies, and socioeconomic backgrounds. It refers to any harmful act perpetrated against an individual based on their gender, disproportionately affecting women and girls. GBV includes various forms of violence such as physical, sexual, emotional, and psychological abuse, as well as harmful practices like forced marriages, female genital mutilation, and human trafficking. In the context of humanitarian action, addressing GBV becomes even more critical as conflicts, natural disasters, and displacement often exacerbate existing gender inequalities and expose individuals to increased risks of violence. Humanitarian agencies recognize the urgent need to integrate a gender perspective into their work, ensuring that the specific needs, capacities, and vulnerabilities of women, men, girls, and boys are taken into account.
